UNICA – Brazilian Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Association
The Brazilian Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Association (UNICA) is the representative organization of the main producers of sugar, ethanol (fuel alcohol), bioelectricity and bioenergy in Brazil’s Center-South region, particularly in the state of São Paulo. Established in 1997, UNICA was created through the merger of several sectoral organizations from São Paulo during the deregulation of the sugarcane industry in Brazil. Since then, the association has acted in alignment with the interests of bioenergy producers both in Brazil and worldwide.
UNICA is governed by a Deliberative Council composed of representatives of its member companies and supported by a highly qualified technical team of executives, specialists and consultants working on a full-time basis. Its technical expertise covers strategic areas such as environment, energy, technology, foreign trade, corporate social responsibility, sustainability, legislation, economics and communication.
In late 2007, UNICA opened its first international office in the United States, followed by the establishment of its European office in 2008, with the objective of providing qualified information on the socioeconomic and environmental contributions of the sugarcane industry to key stakeholders, including governments, non-governmental organizations, companies, the media and consumers. From 2017 onwards, UNICA expanded its geographic scope to Asia, with a particular focus on India and Japan, strengthening its global engagement.
